The Cradle of Humankind is situated in the Gauteng Province of South Africa near the Sterkfontein Caves. A 2, 5 million year old skull was found in these caves in 1947 and has led scientists and archeologists to the conclusion that this is the place that early man first learned to walk upright and use opposable thumbs. There have been many other fossils located in the caves and the surrounding areas all representing what scientists refer to as the missing link. These fossils are in fact the parents to the entire human species and this location is where we first became human.
