Dome on the range

The Vredefort Dome has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site as the biggest and the oldest visible meteorite impact in the world. The Dome is situated in the Free State, one of South Africa’s 9 Provinces just a couple of hours drive from Johannesburg. The impact site has been estimated to be about 2 023 million years old its’ impressive radius of 190km can clearly be seen by satellites in space. Many scientists believe that the age of the dinosaurs came to end due to the impact of a meteorite. This meteorite strike may even have been the cause of the ice age.
