It has recently become very clear how important the preservation of our wetlands is in the prevention of desertification and other environmental disasters. Thus the Greater St. Lucia Wetlands have become protected as a National Park in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. These wetlands have also been designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO for its’ cultural significance. The area is still fished by local fishermen using traditional fish traps which have been handed down from father to son for generations. The traditional villages and crafts are also open to the public who would like to experience the ancient traditions of the locals.
