Historic Robben Island
Posted on March 3rd, 2010 by Steve
Robben Island is one of South Africa’s 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites. The word ‘Robben’ derives from the Dutch word ‘Robbe’ which means seals and that is exactly what Robben Island has plenty of, seals. And where there are seals, there are sharks. These waters are well known as the home of the legendary Great White Shark so scuba diving is not a recommended activity. But the Island is most famous for its prison where former South African President Nelson Mandela and many of his ANC compatriots were held in the apartheid era. The prison is now open for tourists to experience what life in the prison must have been like in the past.
